Miller Barondess LLP has added a media, entertainment and intellectual property attorney who has served as general counsel for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Paramount Pictures Corp. as of counsel in its Los Angeles office, the firm announced.

Jay Rakow, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who also worked closely with billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian in several ventures over the years, will focus at Miller Barondess on counseling business clients on media, entertainment and various IP matters, according to the firm’s Dec. 14 announcement.

Rakow was closely associated with the late Kerkorian, serving as an executive at the investor’s holding company, Tracinda Corp.; as president of the Lincy Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by Kerkorian that made more than $1 billion in contributions to various charities; and as MGM’s senior executive vice president and general counsel until Kerkorian sold the company in 2005, according to Miller Barondess.

Most recently, Rakow served as chief executive officer of ProCon.org, a nonprofit and nonpartisan civic education website that cites the pros and cons of various matters, according to the firm.

“It is great to be joining [Managing Partner Louis R. “Skip” Miller] and so many incredibly talented litigators who left the top firms in the nation to build Miller Barondess into a litigation powerhouse,” Rakow said in a statement.

Rakow received his undergraduate degree from New York University and his law degree from Cornell Law School, according to Miller Barondess. He is admitted to practice in California, New York and the District of Columbia, according to the firm.

Rakow serves on the board of trustees of the Friar’s Charitable Foundation, continues to sit on the board of directors for ProCon.org and has served as distinguished practitioner-in-residence at Cornell Law School, according to the firm.

Miller Barondess, founded about 10 years ago, has 25 attorneys who specialize in litigation in practice areas such as intellectual property, corporate and partnership control contests, commercial litigation, real estate, employment disputes, bankruptcy litigation and entertainment, according to its website.

“We are excited to continue the growth of Miller Barondess LLP by adding Jay Rakow to our top-tier team of lawyers,” Miller said in a statement. “Jay’s vast experience — not only in high-stakes litigation and entertainment deals, but as a public company general counsel, CEO of a leading website and adviser to prominent business leaders — will prove to be a great resource for our clients and colleagues.”
